Three important tips to get the most out of your self tanner

If you’re reading this, then chances are that you’re on the hunt for a perfect self-tanner that won’t leave you streaky or your belongings stained. No matter how many horror stories you’ve heard, it’s possible to give yourself a flawless sunless tan from a bottle that’s indistinguishable from the real deal without making a mess, provided that you know what you’re doing. Here are our top three self tanning tips.

1. We know you’re sick of hearing it, but exfoliate

Yes. We know. It’s impossible to read an article about self tan tips or the side of a self-tanner package without seeing the “exfoliate” tip. However, believe us when we say that this tip is included so often for good reason. Think of it this way: Let’s say you found a slab of wood in the forrest. If you laid some stain or paint on it, it would probably look uneven and splotchy. But if you sanded it down first, you’d get a much more even finish.

Long story short: Exfoliate. You don’t need any special tools. If you don’t have any body scrub, just add some raw sugar to your favorite body wash.

2. Do it in the shower

While we’re dedicated to customer satisfaction above anything else, we won’t pay for the dry cleaning on your white duvet cover if you choose to self-tan in your bedroom.

No matter how much of a seasoned self-tanning pro you consider yourself to be, always do it in your shower, where any spilled or splattered product can easily be rinsed away.

3. Go slow! Seriously

Much like how regular tanners think they’re slick enough to apply product in their bedroom without making a mess, a lot of regular tanners think that they can rush their work and get a good result.

Well, the truth is that applying a self tan foam or lotion requires a slow, steady and even application if you want it to look good. It’s tempting to rush through it, but avoid temptation. A great application should take at least 10 minutes. Work slow with long, even strokes. Above all else, follow the instructions, even if you’re the type to typically throw them away. Trust us, you’ll like your finished look a lot better if you do it by the book.
